Are you sailing in the Dutch province North Holland? WinGPS 5 can now send operation requests automatically to more than 50 bridges and locks in the province of North Holland. This way the bridges and locks can be operated efficiently and allows you to sail along on the blue wave.  A better flow on both road and water will be realized.

Blue wave

Sailing on the Blue Wave, just like the Green Wave on the road, but on the water. This shortens the waiting time at the bridge or locks and reduces fuel consumption. In other words, lower costs for you and we all save the environment.

Because the bridge does not have to be opened as often, this improves traffic flow and improves accessibility on both the road and the water.

How does the bridge management system (BMS) work?

You click on the BMS button on the toolbar in WinGPS 5 - 2021 (Navigator, Pro, Voyager or Inland) and fill in the requested data. On the chart in WinGPS you can immediately see which bridges participate in the BMS; these have a black or green circle.

Tip: To use BMS you need a working internet connection on your laptop. For example via a hotspot on your smartphone.

When you approach a bridge/lock while sailing, you are automatically registered. A message is sent to the bridge/lock keeper so that they know you are coming, including the ETA. Together with the information about the traffic on the road, public transport and the emergency services, the bridge/lock keeper can determine the best operating time.

In this way, the passage through the bridge or lock is used as efficiently as possible and it needs to be operated less often.

Important bridges and locks in the Netherlands are connected to the BLIS (Blauwe Golf Verbindend) of Rijkswaterstaat.

In WinGPS 5 you can see the expected opening time, distance and recommended sailing speed when you approach a BLIS bridge or lock at Routes > Routeplanner Info. This allows you to adjust your sailing speed and thus save fuel and emit less CO2/NO2.

BLIS is not only available for North Holland, but for the whole of the Netherlands. Being able to see the expected opening time, distance and recommended sailing speed is only available in North Holland. It is our intention to make this available throughout the Netherlands in WinGPS 5. Keep an eye on our news items for more information about this.
